Transformation of Arts and Crafts Style home

A 1920s Arts and Crafts Style house purchased by couple new to Harpenden with a young family seeking to create a forever family home in the much sought after Avenues.

The house had been unsympathetically extended previously and was in need of complete renovation.

Situated in The Avenues Conservation Area, care needed to be exercised in transforming the house into a contemporary home.

The proposal included: Oak frame porch from Border Oak, two storey side extension, single storey rear extension with verandah, loft conversion, new free-standing garage and complete back to bare walls refurbishment.

The forms and materials were carefully chosen to compliment the Arts and Crafts Style original.

The open plan rear extension is of more contemporary design with full height, slim frame sliding glass doors.

A projecting canopy with western red cedar soffit provides passive solar shading to the south facing space.

This is part of a Fabric First approach to more sustainable design principles employed by UCHI Architecture.

A UCHI signature double height entrance hall with two storey slot window and chandelier by Bocci.

The interiors use a neutral palette of large format stone tiles used inside and out. The kitchen, by Tom Howley has contrasting dark island in Neptune blue.

Master ensuite uses porcelain tiles veined with copper to match the copper bathroom fittings.
